November 8 - NQY Airport Passengers Could Face £10 Fee

Good Morning,

So the biggest problem I face every weekend in the winter is deciding what meal to eat on Sundays.

We’ve always been a let’s treat ourselves family on Sundays, and I’m always torn between a Thai takeaway or a roast dinner.

Whichever I pick, I feel guilty. 🙃

P.S. Try the Thai Van near the Barrowfields or the one near the Golf Club.
For roast dinner, try the Griffin, though don’t wear a jumper, as it’s hotter than the Sahara desert inside.

NQY Airport Passengers Could Face £10 Fee

Passengers using Newquay Airport may have to pay an additional £10 fee on top of their flight costs to help prevent Cornwall Council from going bankrupt.

The council faces a predicted shortfall of over £100 million next year and needs to find an immediate £9 million saving to balance the 2024 budget.

In February, the council estimated a £67 million budget gap for 2025/26, which was later reduced to £58 million after a review. Despite cuts, a funding gap of just over £9 million remains. Key points:

  • Original budget gap for 2025/26: £67 million.

  • Reduced to £58 million after reviewing service directorates.

  • £49 million saved through cuts, but a £9 million gap persists.

Following a lengthy meeting, the committee recommended several strategies to close the gap, including:

  • Selling “more or all” council-owned car parks to Corserv, its own company.

  • Introducing a £10 levy on all departing passengers over age 17 at Cornwall Airport Newquay, possibly starting April 1, 2025.

These actions aim to bridge the financial shortfall and maintain essential services.

PS I’d happily pay £10 to keep the airport open.
